LED screen completely black: step-by-step diagnosis
An LED wall that no longer lights up is almost never « dead ». In the vast majority of cases the fault sits before the panels: power, controller or video signal. Here is the method Lédia, our AI engineer, uses to locate it in minutes.
The first five minutes
- Check the screen's circuit breaker and the power supply indicators behind the cabinets.
- Look at the receiving card status LEDs: a blinking green means data is arriving.
- Check the sending box is powered with normal indicators, then reboot it: the single action that fixes the most black-screen calls.
- Check the cable between the source (PC, player) and the controller, and the first network cable to the wall.
- Lower then raise brightness in the software: a screen set to 0% is a classic ghost failure.
The internal test pattern, your best tool
Every serious controller (NovaStar, Colorlight, Brompton, Linsn…) can display an internally generated pattern with no video source: solid colours, gradients, grid.
If the pattern displays, panels, receiving cards, data cabling and power are fine. Don't touch the wall: the problem is the source or its distribution.
If the pattern does not display, the fault sits between the controller and the first cabinet: controller power, output port, network cable, or the first receiving card of the chain.
Black screen with a splitter or matrix: think HDCP
A screen that stays black only with certain sources (Blu-ray player, TV box, some PCs) while the test pattern works is very often HDCP, HDMI's copy protection.
Plug the source straight into the controller, bypassing splitters and matrices. If the image comes back, replace the intermediate device with one that passes HDCP end to end, or change the source.
When to call an engineer
Dead controller power supply, a receiving card with no indicator despite a known-good cable, or a show about to start with the basic checks already done: don't push on alone. A guided diagnosis avoids dismantling cabinets for nothing.

The screen is black but the card LEDs blink green — what does that mean?
Data is flowing: the cards receive the signal. Look at brightness set to 0%, a missing video source or an empty mapping window in the software rather than at cabling.
Is rebooting the controller safe?
Yes. Power-cycling the sending box does not change any saved configuration. It is the first reflex, especially after a power cut or transport.
Why does the wall work with my PC but stay black with the client's player?
Typical HDCP block or unsupported output resolution. Force the player output to 1080p60 and test without the splitter.
The screen went dark during a storm — where do I start?
Breaker and surge protection first, then cabinet power supplies, then the controller. If you smell burning or see marks, cut power and call a qualified electrician.
