Configuration lost after a power cut: Send is not Save

The wall ran perfectly for weeks, then a power cut, and at reboot: scrambled image, wrong mapping, or an unrecognizable screen. The configuration was not « lost » — it had never been saved into the wall.

Quick answerIn every ecosystem, sending a configuration to the cards (Send) applies it immediately but does not write it to permanent memory. Without the save step (Save to Hardware on NovaStar, equivalents elsewhere), the configuration lives in RAM and vanishes at the first power cut. Resend the configuration file, then save it into the cards.

Why the wall « forgot » its configuration

At commissioning, the technician loads the configuration file (RCFG on NovaStar, equivalents on Colorlight, Linsn…) and sends it to the receiving cards. The wall displays correctly — and everyone moves on.

But that send is only a temporary application. Writing to the cards' flash memory is a separate step, often a different button. Skip it and the wall works… until the first power cut, weeks or months later. Hence baffling failures « without anyone touching anything ».

Restore, then lock in

  1. Find the wall's configuration file: commissioning folder, integrator's backup, or file kept in the control software.
  2. Reload it in the software and send it to the receiving cards: the image should return to normal immediately.
  3. Then save the configuration to hardware (Save to Hardware or equivalent): that is the step that was missing.
  4. Test by power-cycling the wall: the configuration must survive the cycle.
  5. Export a dated copy of the configuration file and calibration coefficients, stored off the control PC.

If no configuration file exists

Some software can read the configuration back from a still-healthy card and propagate it to the others. Otherwise the configuration must be rebuilt (module type, scan, mapping) — expert work, especially if the cards' firmware does not faithfully reflect real values. A typical escalation case, and the definitive argument for systematic backups.

When to call an engineer

No configuration file, a mapping still wrong after resending, or read-back values inconsistent with the module: get guided help. Rebuilding a configuration blind can degrade the display or drive modules beyond their limits.

Frequently asked questions

The image is shifted or duplicated after the cut — same problem?

Most likely: the mapping (each cabinet's position in the image) is part of the unsaved configuration. Resend the full file then save to the cards.

Where do I find my wall's configuration file?

In the commissioning folder from the installer, on the control PC, or from your integrator. A professionally delivered wall always comes with its configuration and calibration files.

Does saving to the cards wear out their memory?

Card flash memory handles thousands of write cycles: saving after every change is no problem at all. The real risk is not saving — never the opposite.

How do I prevent this happening again?

Two habits: save to hardware after every validated change, and keep a dated backup of configuration and calibration files off the control PC — the computer dies more often than the wall.
